Winners of the 53rd annual Western Manitoba Science Fair

The 53rd annual Western Manitoba Science Fair was held on Tuesday April 11, 2023 at the Healthy Living Centre at Brandon University. This year we hosted 332 students with 225 projects from 22 schools around Brandon and Western Manitoba. Our Best of Fair winner is: Diego Gaudet of École La Source, Grade 11, with his project Appétent à l'aversion Our Runners up are: Jessica Tichit of École Harrison, Grade 8, with her project The Transportation & Storage of Electrons Armaan Chaudhari of Vincent Massey High School, Grade 9, with his project Antibiotics: Synthetic and Natural Spencer Pearce of École La Source, Grade 10, with his project Les sons calmes These four students have received an all expenses paid trip to move on to represent Western Manitoba at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Edmonton from May 14-19, 2023! Brandon Police Service investigate Bear Mace Incident

On April 11, 2023, police responded to a report of a robbery at a business in the 1500 block of 18th street. The suspect sprayed an employee with bear mace and fled with a new IPhone. Two other employees attempted to chase the suspect, but they too were sprayed. The mace contaminated a large area of the business, which was then closed to allow the substance to subside. No other individuals were sprayed directly, but many felt the effects of the spray, and were attended to on scene by members of BFES. The suspect is described as a male, approximately 6 feet, wearing a black ‘kangol’ style hat turned backwards, a loose red hoodie/jacket with “Canada” across the chest, with baggie black pants and black loafers with a white sole. Top Female Wrestler Headlining Fundraiser in Rivers

Tessa Blanchard, 2019 IMPACT! Wrestling Wrestler of the Year and a participant in WWE’s first ever Mae Young Classic will be bringing her talents to Western Manitoba in May. Blanchard will be a part of Canadian Wrestling Elite’s Hostile Takeover Tour that will be making a stop in Rivers on Saturday, May 6th. She will be joined by CWE Champion “Hotshot” Danny Duggan, 2x CWE Champion “The Zombie Killer” MENTALLO and many other CWE favorites. This show will be a fundraiser for the Rivers Firefigher Association, and this will be the 2nd consecutive year they have put on a wrestling show in the community 20 minutes north of Brandon. During the show, there will be a canteen open and all proceeds from there go to the Rivers High School Hockey Academy. If participants want to enjoy an alcoholic drink while enjoying the exciting pro wrestling action, there will be a bar open and all those proceeds go to the local Rivers Legion. So if you want to have a night out watching one of the best female wrestlers in the world and help raise some money at the same time come out to Rivers on May 6th. Location: Riverdale Community Centre, 101 Main St, Rivers MB. Doors open 6:00PM, Bell Time 7:00PM. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door. Kids 12 & under are $10. Intoxicated female banging on doors

On April 10, 2023 shortly before 9:00 pm, police responded to a report of a female banging on doors in the area of the 700 block of Princess Ave.  Police located an intoxicated 19-year-old female, who was in no condition to care for herself, and there was nobody to turn her over to.  She was lodged at Brandon Police Service until sober.

Brandon male arrested after he allegedly points handgun at pedestrians

At approx. 7:05 AM Saturday, police were called the area of 1st St and Rosser Ave by two people that had been approached by a man with a gun. The victims stated the male asked for a cigarette and when then just continued to walk away the male pointed a hand gun at them. Officers were able to locate an 18 year old male matching the description provided by the callers, in the 100 block of Victoria Ave. The male was found to have a piece of Glock style pistol in his possession. The Police Service dog was used to conduct an article search, resulting in the recovery of another part of the handgun in a yard nearby. The male will appear in court today charged with 2 counts of Point Firearm, and Breach of Probation and 1 count each of Possession of a Weapon Dangerous and Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm.
