Source: BPS News Release On November 1, 2022, at approximately 8:40 am, police observed a stolen red Dodge Caravan in the downtown area.  The vehicle was observed travelling the wrong way on both Rosser Ave and Princess Ave.  Shortly after this, police were in a position to implement a stop stick to deflate the suspect vehicle tires when the vehicle eventually travelled east bound on Pacific Ave. Once the vehicle drove over the stop stick and the tires were deflating, officers were then in a position to follow it as it turned south on 1st street where it eventually came to a stop near the corner of 1st street and Maryland Ave as one of the tires had completely come off the rim. Four individuals were arrested from the stolen vehicle just prior to 9:00 am. The driver, a 22-year-old male was lodged at Brandon Police Service.  He will appear in court today on charges of Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon, Dangerous Driving X2, Flight From Police and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. A 45-year-old male passenger was also lodged at Brandon Police Service.  He will appear in court today on charges of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime and Fail to comply with Probation. Two female passengers were also arrested and later released.  The 24-year-old and the 36-year-old will each appear in court in December on charges of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.

Source: Brandon Police Service Media Release On November 1, 2022, at 9:53 am, police responded to a report of a fight at a residence on Cornwallis Cres.  When police arrived at the home they learned that the individuals involved had fled and were in possession of firearms. Police immediately notified the two nearby schools of the situation, and the schools went into a lockdown as a precaution. At 10:03 am, police received a 911 call from an individual within Crocus Plains High School, that there was a person inside with a firearm.  This call initiated an immediate response from police as officers began the process of securing the school while conducting a search of it for any suspects.  Following a thorough search and an investigation into the matter including interviewing employees and viewing security footage, police were able to determine that the suspects never came into the school, and the lock down was ended by 11:35 am. At approximately 10:00 am, police had located and arrested one of the suspects a short distance away from the residence.  The 19-year-old female was in possession of an air soft pistol. She was lodged at Brandon Police Service and will appear in court today on weapons charges. The Police Service Dog unit assisted in recovering a sawed off shotgun nearby the original residence. A BPS By-law officer who was in the area at the time of the original call observed one of the suspects immediately leave the area in a vehicle. The vehicle went to the area of the Brandon Shoppers Mall where police were able to locate and arrest a second suspect near 20th street on the west side of the mall at 10:16 am. The 27-year-old male will appear in court today on weapons charges. Police were aware of an outstanding subject from the initial call, who was responsible for an assault there and was possibly in possession of a firearm.  Attempts to locate the suspect at several other residences within Brandon were made before the 27-year-old was located at a residence in the 900 block of 26th street at 1:13 pm.  He surrendered to police and was arrested.  He was not in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest. A fourth suspect returned to the initial residence on Cornwallis Cres on her own and was arrested at the scene by officers shortly before 11:00 am.  The 19-year-old female was wanted on outstanding charges of Fail to Attend Court X2 and will appear in court on January 9, 2023. Further investigation revealed that the 27-year-old male suspect had assaulted and threatened to shoot a female victim at the residence on Cornwallis Cres which prompted the initial report.  The victim sustained minor injuries, but did not require medical attention. The 27-year-old male was lodged at Brandon Police Service and will appear in court today on charges of Assault, Uttering Threats, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized, Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition, Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order X3.

City of Brandon PSA: Update on Fire At Eastview Landfill Site On November 1, 2022 at approximately 7:30 p.m., a significant stockpile of wood caught fire in the northwest section of the Eastview Landfill Site. An individual in the area noticed the fire and reported it to 911. Emergency services were then dispatched to the Eastview Landfill. City of Brandon Solid Waste staff were called in to assist Brandon Fire & Emergency Services in controlling the fire by using backhoes and loaders to pull materials away from the fire. Crews addressed the fire as a controlled burn and remained on scene throughout the night. While the incident is still under investigation, it is believed that the fire started by embers from a nearby wood incinerator. Weather conditions were favourable for containing the fire and there was no risk to any buildings or the community. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A large fire broke out at the Brandon Landfill on Tuesday night, sending plumes of smoke into Brandon's east end. Brandon Fire and Emergency Services attended, and with the help of heavy equipment at the landfill, began tackling the flames. It doesn't appear that any structures were damaged, however that detail hasn't been confirmed. As of 11:00pm on Tuesday night the fire was still raging. A distinct orange glow was visible from far away. No word on what caused the fire or how long emergency crews will be on scene for.

UPDATE on events in the area of 1st street and Maryland Ave, November 1, 2022: We will have more information on two separate incidents, which occurred in the area of 1st street and Maryland as those investigations unfold.  One situation involves a vehicle stop at that location at approximately 8:45 am, and the second incident involves a report of individuals with firearms in the same area at approximately 9:53 am.  Suspects have been arrested in both incidents, which are unrelated.  Both matters are still under investigation. Source: BPS News Release At approx. 10 AM today Police responded to a call of a disturbance on Cornwallis Cres.  Upon arrival they were advised that several people had left the residence and may be armed with firearms.  Police advised Crocus Plains School and Maryland School staff to lock and hold for safety reasons.  Police had no information that the subjects were in the schools or heading in that direction. Shortly thereafter there was a second call that a subject may be in Crocus Plains.  Officers are conducting thorough search of Crocus Plains for safety reasons.  It appears now that the information indicating someone may be in the school was not accurate.  The matter is still under investigation.

Around 12:30 pm on Saturday, an impaired driver was observed by witnesses in the area of 18th St and Richmond Ave.  Further information revealed the suspect vehicle may be stolen.  The vehicle, a red Dodge Grand Caravan, was observed by an officer on 18th St. It was located stopped at a red light north bound on 18th St at Park and a vehicle stop was conducted.  As the officer exited his vehicle to speak with the driver, the vehicle pulled around the police cruiser, striking the back fender as well as a second vehicle stopped in traffic.  The driver of the van sped North on 18th St at a high rate of speed and was last observed at Victoria Ave.  No pursuit of the suspect vehicle was engaged due to heavy traffic on 18th St and the driving of the suspect vehicle.  There was minor damage to the police cruiser and the second vehicle. No one was injured. The driver of the suspect vehicle has been identified and an arrest warrant will be issued for his arrest on Monday on charges of Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon, Dangerous Driving and Flight from Police.
