Robbery/ Assault with a Weapon  At 7:42 am, Police were called to a disturbance in the 100 block of 13th St. Once on scene, they arrested a 38-year-old male in relation to an incident from December 9th at a residence on Westaway Bay. The victim had reported attending to a residence and once inside the residence he was assaulted by two males. The accused struck the victim multiple times with a bottle prior to stealing the victims’ personal items including clothing and a phone. The suspect was arrested for robbery and assault with a weapon and was held in custody to appear in court in the morning. Firearms Offenses  At 10:49 am, Police attempted to arrest a suspect in the 800 block of Pacific Ave, and the suspect threw down a knife he had in his possession and fled on foot. Police began pursuing the suspect and witnessed him then toss a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun. A K9 track was initiated shortly after which led to a residence in the 900 block of Rosser Ave. The 36-year-old suspect was arrested a short time later and charged with possession of a firearm while prohibited, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and carrying a concealed weapon. He was held in custody for court in the morning. Other Arrests  13 other individuals were arrested for public intoxication, breach of peace and having outstanding warrants for arrest.

At 4:51PM, police came upon a collision at Victoria Avenue and 18th Street. A north bound vehicle failed to yield to traffic, colliding into a second vehicle. The driver displayed signs consistent with alcohol intoxication.  She provided two breath samples at the scene, failing both times.  The 39y/o woman had her driver's license seized for 90 days and her vehicle impounded for 30 days. There were no injuries and both vehicles had to be towed. At 6:27PM, police were called to 18th Street and Park Avenue for another motor vehicle collision.  Witnesses stated that a vehicle slid through a red traffic light colliding with a second vehicle.  The driver provided two breath samples at the scene, failing both times.  A 67y/o man had his driver's license seized for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 30 days.  There were no injuries.

The Manitoba government is launching a new Business Security Rebate Program to help businesses repair property damage and make security upgrades, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced today. “Our government is stepping up to support business owners with the Manitoba Business Security Rebate,” said Wiebe. “We came together with community stakeholders and our partners in the police to tailor this rebate to address the security needs of Manitoba businesses, workers and communities.” The Business Security Rebate Program has $10 million available to provide rebates on a first-come, first-served basis to Manitoba businesses with 75 or fewer employees per location. Eligible businesses can apply for up to $2,500 per location to offset the cost of purchasing security equipment or repairing property damage on or after Aug. 23, 2024. Eligible upgrades include: security and doorbell cameras; alarm systems; motion detectors; window protection; anti-graffiti film and paints; and security fencing and lighting. Eligible repairs and expenses include: broken windows; broken doors and locks; damages from forced entry or arson; insurance deductibles related to damage repairs; graffiti removal; replacement of signage and cash systems; and temporary boarding or fencing to secure premises until permanent repairs can be made. “Store-based investments that create safer, more secure environments are one of the most effective ways to deter crime,” said John Graham, director of government relations, Retail Council of Canada. “This nationally unprecedented commitment is yet another strong example of the Manitoba government’s leadership across Canada, demonstrating a clear dedication to supporting safer retail and restaurant spaces while advancing meaningful crime reduction.” The Manitoba government initially launched the Manitoba Security Rebate Program in June 2024 to provide up to $300 to thousands of homeowners and renters for equipment to protect properties. In October, the Manitoba government opened a $2-million intake for homeowners and renters for purchases made on or after Aug. 23, 2024. A 27-year-old was arrested for multiple charges including Assault Peace Officer, Possess Cocaine for the Purposes of Trafficking, and Possess a Restricted Weapon amongst other weapons related charges. Police initiated a traffic stop where the accused was an occupant of the vehicle. During a search incident to arrest the accused slapped away the hands of the officer and attempted to flee. A short foot pursuit was initiated followed by a Taser deployment and arrest. Located within the vehicle was a handgun with a loaded magazine and 30 grams of cocaine. The male will appear in court on these charges later today.

As of 2:30 p.m. today, the City of Brandon has received approximately 15 cm of snowfall, triggering a city-wide plowing operation to begin tonight, Dec. 10, at 12 midnight. Snowfall accumulation, snow density, humidity, fluctuating temperatures, wind velocity and direction, along with the time of year, all influence the City’s response to snow events. The City uses a priority-based system for street clearing, determined by street classification and traffic volume. Street clearing operations always begin with Priority 1A Route, which includes key streets, sidewalks, and walking paths to ensure safe and efficient mobility for all. In emergency situations, snow removal equipment may be redirected as necessary to support police, fire, or ambulance response vehicles. Tentative Snow Clearing Schedule The City’s Public Works Team has released a preliminary schedule for snow clearing over the coming days, aiming to finish by Sat, Dec. 20. Please keep in mind that these plans may change. Updates will be posted daily at 2 p.m. on the City’s social media during the snow clearing event. Residents can stay informed about progress by visiting snowmap.brandon.ca, which regularly updates the status of streets, sidewalks and paths, as well as back lanes. Plowing on streets will start with the P1A route at midnight tonight, then continue through other priority areas before moving into residential neighborhoods. Sidewalks will also be cleared beginning at midnight alongside street work. Clearing of multi-use pathways is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Dec. 10).
