City of Brandon Breaks Ground on Historic Water Treatment Facility Expansion

The City of Brandon is proud to announce the start of construction on the new Membrane building at the Water Treatment Facility—the single largest construction contract ever awarded by the City. This investment will introduce advanced membrane technology to treat the challenging Assiniboine River water, ensuring Brandon’s drinking water meets and exceeds national standards. During the construction phase, the existing water treatment facility will continue to operate while the new membrane building is integrated with the current infrastructure. The construction activities are expected to affect residents in the vicinity of the Water Treatment Facility and all users of Queen Elizabeth Park. Given the multi-year timeline, impacts will include restricted access, increased traffic, and varying levels of construction noise as the project progresses. At its regular meeting on Mon, July 28, Brandon City Council approved the bid from NAC Constructors Ltd. to undertake this project at a cost of $127.9 million. The project is scheduled for completion in 2029 and will supply water to all homes, schools, and businesses in the community. “This is a huge investment in our city’s future, one that reflects our commitment to doing what Brandon does best: delivering reliable, high-quality services to our residents,” said Mayor Jeff Fawcett. “The new membrane building will ensure safe, reliable drinking water for our community for generations to come. It’s a major step forward for Brandon.  I’m proud and excited to see this project finally get underway after years of work, collaboration, and vision.” The City will provide regular updates to residents at key milestones, especially when construction may impact affected residents.
