Virden’s Grady Lane selected 1st overall in annual MJHL draft

The MJHL's annual bantam draft took place earlier this morning and Virden's Grady Lane was the first player selected by the Winkler Flyers.   Lane registered 42 points in 35 regular season games while skating with the Southwest Cougars.  With the second overall selection in the draft the Dauphin Kings drafted Sloan Stanick who amassed 59 points in just 36 games for the Yellowhead Chiefs.   Other notable selections in today's first round include Foxwarren's Colby Wotton who went to Waywayseecapo with the 7th overall pick and Treherne's Roux Bazin who was selected 10th overall by Virden.  Wotton spent the 2017/18 season with the Yellowhead Chiefs while Bazin suited up for the Pembina Valley Hawks.   Nolan Wallace was the lone player from Brandon selected. The 5'8" defensemen was selected in the 5th round, 46th overall by the Virden Oil Capitals.  This year's draft was held in Winnipeg and featured players born in 2003. AAA Midget Wheat Kings announce new head coach

Source: Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings Facebook The executive of the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings is pleased to announce that they have hired Chris Johnston as their new head coach for the upcoming 2018-2019 hockey season. This will be Chris' first time as head coach of the Brandon AAA Midget program after spending the last two season as an assistant coach to Tyson Ramsey. Chris has coached at many levels over the last 11 years. Before coaching Chris played hockey at many levels including the American Hockey League, Central Hockey League, East Coast Hockey League plus 5 years in the WHL. The executive looks forward to Chris' experience to continue the tradition of developing players for the next level.

U14 Magic Win Gold in Saskatoon division “A”

Submitted This past weekend saw your local U14 Westman Magic Softball Team travel to Saskatoon to compete in the 2018 Presidents Tournament. The “A” level division brought in 16 teams from Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Your Westman Magic team selected from western Manitoba was well represented, going undefeated throughout the weekend, setting themselves up for the gold medal game Sunday night. The teams offensive power, active defense and leadership of the veteran players earned them a championship title and gold medal as they defeated Sherwood Park, Alberta 3-2.

Deer Ridge to hold a Junior League in 2018

Deer Ridge Golf Course is offering a Junior Summer league every Wednesday in July and August starting July 4th between 12:30-5:00pm. The league is designed for children aged 7-14.  The participants must be physically able to walk and play 9 holes without an adult. League is for kids with previous experience Fees include tournament style format event every Wednesday, lunch, tutorials to improve their golf game and an unlimited membership on non tournament days. MB Hawks, Girls of the North and Southwest Storm victorious on Championship Sunday

The third and final week of the 2018 Source for Sports AAA Summer Hockey Challenge wrapped up today and featured three different female age groups. In the U8 Division, the MB Hawks (pictured above) toppled the North Stars 7-0 in a game played at Westoba Place.  Miley Sorin & Rowyn Street each potted 2 goals for the Hawks.  Street also added 2 assists.  Gabby Robbins, Casey O'Brien and Adriana Pepe added single markers for the Hawks who went undefeated over weekend.   Gina Plett made 6 saves to record the shutout.  In total the Hawks only surrendered 4 goals in the 5 games they played in over the 3 days. Maddie Kaiser picked up 3 goals and added an assist as the U10 Girls of the North upended the Sask Grrrowl by a score of 5-1.  Makenna Williment also had a big afternoon as she chipped in with 2 goals and an assist.  The Girls of the North earlier in the day defeated The Monsters 3-1 to advance to the afternoons final.  They suffered a hard fought 1-0 loss in their opening game of the tournament before rattling off 5 straight victories to repeat as the U10 Champions. The Southwest Storm received 4 goals and an assist from Hayley Kolosky as they cruised past the MB Hurricanes 11-4 in U12 action.  Sophia Anderson & Spring Mosset each added 2 goals for the Storm while Kamryn Cloet, Emily Malchuck, & Billie Baranyk each found the back of the net once.  Replying for the Hurricanes was Vanessa Moreira (2g),  Annika Russell and Addison Kartusch.  Grace Glover registered the win in net for the Storm.  The Hurricanes advanced to the afternoons final after a thrilling win in their semi final game earlier in the morning.  Down 3-0 with only 9 minutes left to play in the third they rallied to score 4 straight goals to upset the MB North Stars 4-3.
