Brandon University Hockey Is Back

With files from the Brandon University Bobcats. Well that isn’t the entire truth but Brandon University Athletics will be hosting a reunion of 90 years of hockey history. Today the Brandon University Bobcats announced plans to host a hockey reunion and alumni game on November 4-5 and are inviting all former Bobcats and Brandon College Caps to attend.   The Bobcats are welcoming former coaches, players and staff from all eras to take part in the event and for many the trip back to BU will be a short one to make. For some it will be a time to catch-up with old friends and converse with former teammates.  "For me, it is going to be a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and to reminisce because I do not think you will find an athlete that played at Brandon University that did not leave with a positive experience," said Peter Gerlinger, a former all-Canadian and 1993 inductee into the BU Sports Wall of Fame.  "You might get a really exciting old-timers hockey game," said ex-Bobcat and Former Wheat King Scott Hlady. "It will be neat to see some of the old Bobcats strap the laces on. I know there is still some players who played in the program that still play senior hockey, so it might be something neat to watch." Alumni will be able to take trip down memory lane by visiting the Wall of Fame and checking out memorabilia tables that will be on display on Friday, November 4 at the Healthy Living Centre where a meet and greet will also be held.  Then on Saturday, November 5, former Bobcats and Caps will turn back the clock with an alumni game at the Sportsplex with the nostalgic contest to start at 1 p.m. To hear the press conference today from BU click  https://soundcloud.com/darryl-wolski/2016-06-01-15-37-06-198a For more BU information  www.gobobcats.ca www.facebook.com/bubobcats www.twitter.com/bubobcats

Coulter, Campbell talk WHL, Memorial Cup, Next Season, and Kaspick Wraparounds

Tyler Coulter and Duncan Campbell recently completed very successful WHL seasons culminating with a WHL Championship and a trip to the Memorial Cup.  Coutler was an offensive force down the stretch and finished the season with 59 points in 69 games. Campbell played on a very dependable and hardworking line alongside Tanner Kaspick and Stelio Mattheos for much of the season and chipped in with 9 points in 21 games in the playoff run . The two were part of six local Brandon players on this year’s roster who defeated Edmonton, Moose Jaw, Red Deer and Seattle on their way to The Ed Chynoweth Cup.  Recently the duo took time out of their busy schedules to sit down with bdnmb.ca at Blu Kitchen & Bar to discuss the past season, the Memorial Cup, their respective off-seasons, and what to expect from the team next season.  Learn who the players think may be a rookie to watch next season, why Campbell elected to join his home-town Wheat Kings over taking the NCAA route, and why Kaspick loves the wraparound. The full interview can be heard here.

Barbed wire, thumb tacks and fanny packs

It was about one would expect to see walking into an independent wrestling show held anywhere in North America.  About 75 fans turned out last night at the ACC gymnasium to witness the night’s activities.   One wall of the gym was lined with merchandise tables, kids ran around sporting their new Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling masks and anxious fans waited for the bell to ring signifying the start of the first match.  Like most  independent wrestling events the talent inside the ring varied from up and coming grapplers dressed in sweat pants and fanny packs looking to make a name for themselves to more veteran, well established wrestling superstars like the ROH’s “The Last Real Man” Silas Young and ROH Tag Team Champion Frankie Kazarian.  Fans were treated to everything from a hardcore tag team match, complete with a barbed wire baseball ball and thumb tacks, to an exciting three way dance in the evening’s main event.
