Wheat Kings forward leads Canada to U20 World Ball Hockey Championship

Brandon Wheat King forward Dawson Pasternak recently travelled to Liberic, Czechia to participate in the U20 World Ball Hockey Championships and returned home a world champion. He, and his Team Canada teammates, captured the 5-team tournament defeating Slovakia 10-3 in the tournament final. Pasternak had a quiet start to the tournament (4A, 4 GP) before exploding for 3 goals and 3 assists in the championship matchup. Paternak, from Winnipeg, was acquired by the Wheat Kings in January from the Portland Winterhawks and finished the season with 22 points in 27 games in a Wheat Kings uniform.

Bobcat BIRT Cup charity golf tournament hosts record 284 golfers

The IG Wealth Management Bobcat BIRT Cup took place today at the Wheat City Golf Course. A record 284 golfers were scheduled to tee off in the charity tournament which will support a number of initiates in Brandon and Westman; Bobcat student-athletes; Baldur Baseball Association (diamond upgrades); Carberry Royals Baseball Team (diamond upgrades); CNIB (guide dogs for the blind or partially sighted); Melita Golf Course (course upgrades); Westman Youth Football Association (Boyd Stadium upgrades) and Westman VOLT Hockey (assisting youth with disabilities). To accommodate the record number of golfers, the event featured a double shotgun start at 8am and 2pm. This years marks the sixth installment of the IG Wealth Management Bobcat BIRT Cup. BIRT is short for basics, intensity, respect and team. Brandon University Sports Wall of Famer, the late Neil Andrews came up with the acronym. Over $257,000 has been raised for various community causes since the Bobcats took over the BIRT Cup in 2018. Once again there was an impressive lineup of prizes for the golfers to potentially win including a Team Canada Mark Scheifele signed jersey, Vegas Golden Knights Logan Thompson signed jersey, New York Islanders Ryan Pulock signed jersey, and more. Wheat Kings announce new play-by-play voice, select forward in CHL import draft

Earlier today, Pattison Media and the Brandon Wheat Kings announced Rob Mahon as the new voice of the Wheat Kings. Mahon spent the previous two seasons as the voice of the Prince Albert Raiders. Prior to his gig with the Raiders he spent 4-seasons with the Estevan Bruins for of the SJHL. Originally from Winnipeg, Mahan will join the team in August. Yesterday, the Wheat Kings had the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 CHL Import Draft and used the spot to select 18-year-old Dominik Petr from Ostrava, Czechia. 20-year-old forward Zakhar Polshakov was waived to make room for Petr. 11U Angels capture city title, advance to AA provincials

The 11U Angels are city Champs and are off to AA provincials July 14-16th in Altona. The 11U Padres were runner ups and off to A provincials July 7-9th in Hamiota. Battle between the 11U Red Sox and Rays was tight and came down bottom of the 6th inning where the Rays were victorious, winning 3rd place.

Bjarnason, Hyland selected in today’s NHL Entry Draft

A pair of Brandon Wheat King teammates were among those selected on day 2 of the NHL's Entry Draft. The Philadelphia Flyers drafted goaltender Carson Bjarnason in the 2nd round, 51st overall while forward Brett Hyland was selected by the Washington Capitals in the 7th round, 200th overall. Bjarnason was the top-ranked North American netminder by NHL Central Scouting.  This past season, he went 21-19-6 with a 3.08 goals-against average and .900 save percentage in 47 games for the Wheat Kings. Hyland picked up 26 goals/47 pts in 42 games last season with Brandon.
