The Brandon Wheat Kings in partnership with the Western Hockey League announced today the 2022-23 Regular Season is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 23, 2022. WHL Clubs will begin announcing their home-opening dates for the 2022-23 WHL Regular Season on Monday, June 20. Brandon’s Jared Jacobson birdied the last three holes on Sunday to capture the 60th annual Grey Owl golf tournament, presented by IG Wealth Management, in thrilling fashion. Jacobson, who plays a lot of his golf at Clear Lake Golf Course, looked right at home as he rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on 18 to fire a 2-under-par 70. Wheat City Golf Course’s Ross Sheard missed a four-foot putt on 18 that would have forced a playoff. Jacobson’s 1-under total of 141 was good enough for his second Grey Owl championship. He also won in 2014. Sheard had a two-shot lead on first-round leader Noel Ngo and a four-shot edge on Jacobson standing on the 16th tee, but he bogeyed the short par 4 while Ngo and Jacobson birdied. Jacobson then pulled within one of Sheard when he rolled in a 12-footer on the par-3 17th for birdie. Sheard parred and Ngo bogeyed, so Sheard had a one-shot edge on both of them going into the final hole. Jacobson, 42, hit a gap wedge to 12 feet, while Sheard put his approach shot on the front left portion of the green, about 30 feet away. Sheard’s putt rolled about four feet past the hole, and then Jacobson stepped up and rolled his putt in for his third straight birdie. Sheard could have forced extra holes, but his four-footer slid just past the right edge. Sheard (71-71—142) and Ngo (70-72—142) tied for second, while defending champion Jay Thiesen of Russel (72-77—149) and Shilo’s Nolan Tutkaluk (75-74—149) tied for fourth. Tim Lynch of Williston, N.D. (79-72—151) won the Greyer Owl title for those age 60 and over. Stephen Johnston of QX104 and 94.3 The Drive won his fifth Media Flight title with scores of 87 and 81 for a 168 total. The Grey Owl was played for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and 261 golfers participated. Brandon's Braden Keeble has confirmed his commitment to join the NCAA Division I Yale University Bulldogs in New Haven, Connecticut. Prior to joining Yale, Keeble will suit up for the Brooks Bandits (AJHL) for the 2022-23 season. Depending on when his coaches feel he’s ready for the next level of play, he will then join Yale for the start of the 2023 or 2024 season. Keeble spent last season with the Brandon Wheat Kings U18 AAA squad where he amassed an impressive 96 points in just 44 regular season games. His strong showing was enough to warrant being named the Canadian Elite Hockey Leagues (CEHL) player of the year for 2021/22. Keeble told bdnmb.ca that he selected Yale over several other schools, including Princeton, for a number of reasons. Pine Ridge Golf Club’s Noel Ngo will sleep on the lead before Sunday’s final round at the 60th annual Grey Owl, presented by IG Wealth Management. Ngo (pronounced nuh-GO) took advantage of pristine weather conditions on Saturday and fired a 2-under-par 70 at picturesque Clear Lake Golf Course. He has a one-shot lead over three golfers after going 3 under on the front and 1 over on the inward nine. Two of the three players one shot back have already captured the Cactus Jack Wells Memorial Trophy. Brandon’s Jared Jacobson, who snared the 2014 title, and Brandon’s Murray Lindenberg, who claimed the title all the way back in 1978, both fired 1-under-par 71s on Friday. Wheat City Golf Course’s Ross Sheard joined those two when he carded a 71 on Saturday. The Grey Owl is being played for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and 261 golfers are in this year’s field. The Olde English Road Hockey League (OERHL), Brandon's premier ball hockey league, held their annual draft earlier tonight at the Westridge Community Centre. The Brookwood Bombers had the first overall selection and used the pick to take Philadelphia Flyers defensemen Travis Sanheim. Bombers owner Mason Kaspick was obviously very pleased to take Sanheim 1st overall. "Coming into the season, we are obviously the youngest team in the league and I was looking to add that veteran presence to our blueline...Sanheim fills that void" said Kaspick. "He's a big bodied defensemen who can chip in offensively when called upon" he added. Former Brandon Wheat Kings captain Connor Gutenberg was then quickly snapped up by the Grimace at #2. To close the first round, the draft saw two former Moose Jaw Warriors get picked back to back as the Moose Knuckles get Tate Popple at #3 and the reigning champion Tobacco Kings get Calder Anderson at #4. In total 20 players heard their name called this evening. Draft time: 16 minutes, 28 seconds Each OERHL team will play 6 games this season, prior to playoffs.
