Emergency department reopens following major flooding at Dauphin hospital

The Manitoba government reopened the emergency department at Dauphin Regional Health Centre on Labour Day, restoring 24-7 emergency care to the community following extensive flood damage to the hospital, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced today.

“Reopening the emergency department in just over two months has been a monumental team effort, and yesterday I had the opportunity to see that work first-hand,” said Asagwara. “There is still a lot more work to do to fully restore the hospital and bring more services back to Dauphin. I want to thank the nurses, physicians, allied health professionals and all the health-care workers who continued caring for patients throughout this disruption and worked tirelessly to make this reopening possible.”

The temporary emergency department is now providing emergency services 24-7 from its existing space on the main floor of Dauphin Regional Health Centre. In-house X-ray and lab services are also available to support patient care. The emergency department reopened following final safety checks, inspections and walkthroughs to ensure the space was ready to safely receive patients and staff, Asagwara noted.

“People in Dauphin and across the Parkland have been waiting for this day,” said Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn. “Having our emergency department open again means families can once again turn to their local hospital when they need emergency care. This is an important step forward for our region, but we know there is more work to do to bring the rest of our hospital back. I’m proud of how our community has come together and I’ll continue working alongside them as that work moves forward.”

With emergency care restored, work continues to safely bring additional hospital services back to Dauphin. A mobile CT unit is expected to be operational within several weeks, while restoration work continues to support the eventual return of services, including surgery and endoscopy, Asagwara added.
