In July of this year, 10-year old Jaxon Jacobson will be heading to Edmonton, Alberta to represent Manitoba at The Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament where he will represent Team Manitoba Brick 2018. Founded by Bill Comrie the Brick Invitational Tournament is among the most prestigious super novice hockey tournaments in North America.  Now in it's 29th year, the tournament showcases the top 10-year old hockey players in North America. The fourteen member team was announced in the middle of November of 2017 and features the top 2008 born players from all over the province. Just like his favorite NHL player Nikolaj Ehlers, Jaxon used a combination of his speed, tenacity and skill to impress the Team Manitoba management team. First lacing up the skates at age two, Jaxon has been playing minor hockey since the young age of four. He currently skates for the Atom AA Wheat Kings, who he lists as his favorite hockey team alongside the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Jaxon is particularly excited about plating in this year's Brick tournament. “I am excited about the opportunity to play for Team Manitoba, it's going to be a lot of fun” he tells bdbmb.ca.  Many players who have played in the tournament have gone on to NHL careers including the likes of Johnny Guadreau, Tyler Sequin, Dougie Hamilton and PK Subban.

The second week of the 49th annual Brandon Tournament of Champions hockey tournament wrapped up today as champions were crowned in four different divisions. The tournament featured teams in the Atom A, Atom AA, Bantam A, and Bantam AA divisions. The 3-day tournament drew teams from all over including Minot, Winnipeg, Dyden, Swift Current, Moose Jaw and more. Atom AA The Brandon Atom AA Wheat Kings (pictured above) required a shootout to eventually topple the Minot Wolves 7-6, in the Atom AA finals. The game was tied at 6 after three periods and neither team was able to find the back of the net in the overtime frame. Jaxon Jacobson had a 3 point afternoon for the Wheat Kings on the strength of 2 goals and 1 assist. Loughlan McMullan (2 g), Ethan Stewart (1g,1a) and Cole Temple (1g, 1a) each picked up 2 points in the win. Minot was lead offensively by Easton Panasuk (2g, 1a), Aidan Diehl (1g, 2a) and Teegan Strand (2g). Atom A Tyson Draper scored 3 goals and added an assist to lead the Virden Junior Oil Capitals to a 5-4 victory over the Dauphin Kings, in the Atom A division. Draper was dominant all weekend racking up 27 points in only 4 games. Colten James chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Oil Capitals who also received a goal from Conner Hoemsen. Dauphin received goals from Easton Odut (2), Ethan Carnegie, and Boston Karlson, in the loss. Bantam A The McCreay Mustangs scored three 3rd period goals en route to upending the Rivers Jets 5-1 in the Bantam A finals, played at the Kinsmen Arena Sunday afternoon. Nelson Lepla had a big game for the Mustangs scoring twice and adding an assist. The Mustangs received single markers off the sticks of Ryan Benson, Kayden Caumartin, & Riley Zdan. Three other skaters (Sheldon Mutch, Drake Pahl, & Shane Shura-Froaes) reached the score-sheet, each compiling 2 assists. Terrance Crampaign was the lone marksmen for the Jets to beat Mustang's goalie JP Pelletier. Bantam AA Liam Cox-Smith amassed 2 goals and 4 assists in the championship final of the Bantam AA division to lead the Minot Wolves to a 7-0 shutout victory over the Seine River Snipers. Also scoring for the Wolves was Benn Bonebrake (2), Aiden Morelli, Ashton Hillman & Riley Opperude. Cox-Smith was the Wolves offensive catalyst all weekend racking up 18 points in just 5 games played. Tre Sortland picked up the shutout.

Over in the Novice A championship final, the KW Canucks (pictured above) received 5 goals from Knox Burton on their way to defeating the Minot Wolves 9-3. Burton was a force all weekend picking up 15 points in 4 games played. Samuel Kotz also had a big afternoon for the Canucks registering 4 points on 2 goals and 2 assists. Landon Prichodko and Nolan Coy each chipped in with singles for the Canucks. Colin Grubb, Keller Schmiechel, and Jaeger Johannes each dented the twine for the Wolves in the loss. Domi Leask scored 3 goals and added 2 assists to help the Swan Valley Stampeders overpower the Steinbch Millers 5-2 in the Pee Wee A Division final. Will Munro chipped in with 2 goals and Bo Eisner had 2 assists in the win. Haiden Willis & Job Peters replied with single markers for the Millers. Net minder Nate Immerkar picked up the win for the Stampeders who won all 4 of their games on the weekend outscoring their opponents 18-4 in the process. The Saskatoon Kodiaks scored 3 first period goals en route to a nail-biting 5-4 victory over the Minot Wolves in the Pee Wee AA final. Tayden Cousins scored twice for the Kodiaks while singles came off the sticks of Roger McQueen, Reid Andresen & Trae Wikkie. Jacob McCarthy made some huge saves late in the game to preserve the win for the team from Saskatoon. Dylan Bast replied for the Wolves.
