Golf tournament raises $45,000 for local causes

The 2020 IG Wealth Management Bobcat BIRT Cup held on July 10 raised $45,000 for local causes. The Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba Westman Chapter, Pawsitive Communities, baseball diamond upgrades in Oak River, the Brandon U18 Wheat Kings hockey club, Making Faces and the Bobcat BIRT Cup Athletic Scholarship Endowment were among the organizations listed to receive support. The winning team (Tom Price, Don Thomson, Dale Coulter, and Warren Watt) shot an impressive a 17-under 55 at the Shilo Country Club to capture the title. This year's tournament marked the 3rd year that the event was run by BU Athletics.

Tamarack Golf Tournament entering its 87th year

Tamarack Golf Tournament is proud to say it will continue for its 87th year from August 15th to August 22nd again at the beautiful Clear Lake Golf Course in Riding Mountain National Park. Golfers from across Canada will once again gather to reconnect with friends, the area and enjoy a world-class family golf tournament. Once again, the tournament will have a full complement of golfers competing in the following divisions: Mens, Ladies, Ladies Scramble, Champion Mens, Senior Mens, Junior Boys, Junior Ladies and Cubs division. The following changes have been made to allow for social distancing and adherence to Manitoba Health requirements: • Cubs division will be capped at 72 golfers and limited to 2 parents or guardians per golfer o This year the event will only be 1 held one day (instead of the usual 2), Wednesday August 19th at Poplar Ridge Golf course • Champion Men's division will now qualify either Saturday or Sunday in addition to regular second round qualifying on Monday • Senior Men's qualifying will move from Friday to Monday • Withdrawal deadline will be moved to July 31, 2020. After that date there will be the normal $100 cancellation fee • Please refer to Clear Lake Golf Course’s COVID policy (www.clearlakegolfcourse.com) so you are completely up to date with the rules and regulations for arriving for your tee time and on course policies. There will be special precautions in place during this year’s version of the tournament, including complete adherence to the rules set out by Manitoba Health and Clear Lake Golf Course during use of their facilities. To comply with the guidelines mandated by Manitoba Health, the tournament will unfortunately have to cancel their normal social events this year. Wheat Kings draft Russian defenceman, Patera inks deal with Vegas Golden Knights

The Brandon Wheat Kings drafted 17-year old Russian defenceman Yaroslav Busygin 39th overall in Tuesday's Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. The  6’2”, 170 lb blueliner skated with 3-different teams in 2019/20, including time in Russia’s top junior hockey league. From Tuesday's release: “He’s a really dependable, smart defenceman who played the off side in a difficult league. We look forward to getting Yaroslav to Brandon and accustomed to our community”, says Wheat Kings General Manager, Darren Ritchie. Patera inks deal with Vegas Golden Knights 21-year-old Czech native Jiri Patera signed a 3-year entry level contract with the Vegas Golden Knights. Patera was a sixth-round pick (No. 161) by the Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Draft. He spent the past two seasons playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings and was recently named the WHL’s Eastern Conference Goaltender of the Year the 2019-2020 season.

Cartwright Minor Baseball receives funding from Westoba Inspire

Cartwright Minor Baseball is thrilled to receive $5600.00 from the Westoba Credit Union Inspire Program to build a shade canopy on the Cartwright Ball Diamonds this summer. “The ball diamonds are gathering place for our entire community,” said Pam Enns, Cartwright Minor Baseball volunteer. “This space is primarily used during ball season, but this project also provides a free picnic area with a view that can be used in rain, sun, wind, evening, and morning from April until October. “ COVID- 19 has impacted individuals, communities, events and businesses in many ways. Therefore, how we bring community together is ever-changing. “Westoba Credit Union is pleased to be able to support a project within the community of Cartwright that provides the opportunity for people to gather safely outside”, said Liz Roberts, Board Director and Westoba Community Investment Committee member. Completion of the sunshade is aimed at September 2020. The Minor Baseball Association will host a community gathering to celebrate the project once complete.
